The Wild Flower Society Annual General Meeting September 2017

Llandudno, North Wales, Friday 1st September to Monday 4th September

This year our Annual General Meeting will be held in the Town of Llandudno. The town is at the foot of Great Orme's Head, home to some of our rarest plants and one of the special botanical hot spots of the British Isles and Ireland. As usual the meeting itself will take only a short time while the main part of the weekend will be a series of walks to sites of botanical interest.

The Great Orme itself is a huge Limestone peninsula jutting out into the Irish sea and is home to such species as Cotoneaster cambricus (Welsh Cotoneaster) at its only station in Britain or Ireland, Veronica spicata (Spiked Speedwell), Hypochaeris maculata (Spotted Cat's-ear), Aster linosyris (Goldilocks Aster), Hieracium cambricum (Welsh Hawkweed), Epipactis atrorubens (Dark-red Helleborine), Valerianella eriocarpa (Hairy-fruited Corn-salad), Brassica oleracea (Wild Cabbage), Sorbus rupicola (Rock Whitebeam), Spiranthes spiralis (Autumn Lady's-tresses), Anacamptis morio (Green-winged Orchid), Anacamptis pyramidalis (Pyramidal Orchid), and Silene nutans (Nottingham Catchfly). In the Spring there are huge areas covered in Helianthemum nummularium (Common Rockrose) and the rocky areas have Helianthemum oelandicum ssp incanum in abundance.

The Great Orme also has two sub species of butterfly which are only known here: Plebeius argus ssp caernensis (Western Silver-studded Blue) and Hipparchia semele ssp thyone (Great Orme Grayling).

Some photographs of the flowers which can be found on the Great Orme throughout the year are illustrated here:
